‘Di Maria’ in tears as he introduces new Rosario player

Angel Di Maria was left in tears as he was unveiled as Rosario Central’s new player. Marking his first return to his hometown club in 18 years.

Di Maria, who was part of the Argentina squad that won the 2022 World Cup. Has always said he wanted to play for Rosario again, but has previously received death threats from drug gangs and has been unable to return immediately.

Rosario, some 300 kilometres from Buenos Aires, is notorious for violent crime, particularly drug gang power struggles.

“To be able to go home after so long means a lot. It’s what I always wanted to do, to come back and play for Central again. To win a championship with Central is the only thing I have never done,” said the 37-year-old, who will wear the No. 11 shirt.

“When I trained today I couldn’t believe it, it was like training for the first time in my life. “I am very happy with this training session,”

He most recently played for Benfica in the Club World Cup. Scoring three goals as the team were eliminated by Chelsea in the round of 16.

“I have no thoughts about retiring, I just want to play. Enjoy it and keep playing at this level for as long as possible,” Di Maria said.
